MAC just released products from its second collaboration with singer Rihanna: Viva Glam Rihanna 2 Lipstick and Lipglass. Both products are described as mauve with frost. These are the most unusual mauves I’ve ever seen.
These products do seem to have mauve tones, but I wouldn’t say that they are the dominant hues. The lipstick is more of a silver-brown with hints of purply mauve. It’s a most unusual color, and it’s definitely more flattering on Rihanna’s deep skin than on mine:
The lipstick has a frost finish, and it may be for this reason that it doesn’t adhere particularly well on the lips. As you can see i the photo, the lipstick seems to be moving outside my lip lines, even though I applied it precisely (I promise!).
The lipglass, which has MAC’s signature sticky formula, lasts quite a bit longer. It is a very sheer lavender color that is almost clear with flecks of red shimmer. It’s actually quite pretty on the lips, and reads as a unique twist on a nude shade.
You can achieve a more concentrated lavender tone by adding a second layer, but that makes the gloss quite a bit goopier and stickier than I like.
The two shades layered create an unusual plum-taupe color that I think works well. This is probably the way I’d wear the lipstick, as I don’t think it looks great on me by itself.
This combo is reasonably long-lasting, thanks to the lipglass, and it doesn’t settle into lip lines until about the fourth hour of wear, which can be solved in turn by applying a fresh layer of gloss. Both products wear comfortably, though again, the slipperiness of the lipstick makes me a bit nervous to wear it by itself for fear of it ending up all over my face.
Overall, these are shades that you won’t find easily in any other range. Whether you like them will depend on your skintone and your tolerance for unusual colors.
